Meet The World

Meet Plearnwan.

In the summer of 2011, I was part of the University of Manitoba’s international practicum program in partnership with Lertlah school in Bangkok, Thailand.  This was the beginning of a beautiful and life changing adventure.

Within my first week of temporarily living in Thailand, the school sent all Thai and Foreign staff on a team building retreat close to HuaHin.  We stayed in a resort in the region of Puktien but also made one stopover before we settled in.  We were all picked up from our teacher residence, about a 25 minute walk from the school we were teaching at.  That morning, we were greeted by tour vans hired by the school to take us all to our destination.  The instruction was to wear blue – which came quite handy when you’re in a packed area, to be able to find each other again for such a large group.

Meet Plearnwan.

After about 2 hours of driving – and that’s factoring in that these cars travel at the fastest rate I’ve ever traveled on road – we arrived from residential Bangkok to Plearnwan, which acts as a living history museum that supports local culture and businesses.  To see the sea of blue of our Lertlah staff wandering around this place was comforting, knowing we could find any of the Thai staff easily to ask questions or to ensure we don’t get as lost in translation with the local vendors.  There were two floors of exhibits and shops, lined with memorabilia and nostalgic objects, images, and textiles.

Meet Plearnwan. Meet Plearnwan.

Meet Plearnwan.Plearnwan is a play on words, combining the English “Play” and “learn” along with the Thai word “Wan“which means yesterday.  I definitely enjoyed this stopover and exploring the market area, the food stalls, and the lovely exhibits showing the objects and sentiments of generations before us.

If ever you’re HuaHin bound, make sure you pay a visit to stretch your legs, explore, and appreciate the nostalgia in the play-and-learn living history museum of PlearnWan!
