Meet The World

Meet Central Park.

Central Park is the oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle.  Top of the Rock observatory deck gives the best view of the immaculate, vast green space flush against the streets of Manhattan.  I could certainly write separate posts about the regions of Central Park.  Truth be told, I have yet to explore each region.

Various maps can lead you to landmarks and attractions in the park.  I use the official Central Park site to learn more about events (free ones too) and attractions.  Central Park Zoo is an example of an attraction I have yet to visit!

Bethesda Terrace and Fountain

Arguably one of the more iconic destinations within the park is Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, pictured above.  The terrace itself is a two-level structure consisting of an observation platform above, and stairs leading to arched entryways below.  My last visit to Central Park, I ran for the bottom terrace in the midst of a sudden thunderstorm and was entertained by buskers who took advantage of the weather.

The Literary Walk and Dance Skating

The Literary Walk is the largest and last remaining group of rows of American Elms that drape visitors in shade and greenery.  Busts and statues of prominent writers line this area, called the Mall, or Promenade.  During one of my first visits, I had the pleasure of finding the Skate Circle used for Dance Skating.  This is exactly what it sounds like – people on roller skates having a whole lot of fun to music.  The Central Park Dance Skaters Association meet at the Skate Circle and have a party and all are welcome to join in on the fun.

Strawberry Fields and Sheep Meadow

There’s no mistaking where Strawberry Fields is, with the highly visited Imagine tribute to John Lennon.  This is often crowded (as seen above) because it’s close to one of the main entrances and Subway lines leading into the park.  Sheep Meadow, a short walk away from Strawberry Fields, is my favourite place to lie down and enjoy the juxtaposition of nature and metropolis.

Central Park is a great place for families, to go on a date, or to explore on your own.  You’ll find many places that you’ll remember from photos or movies, and places where you’ll make your own memories.  Enjoy your stroll through New York’s Central Park, everyone!
