Back to my life in my temporary home 5 years ago, where I spent a quarter of the year teaching and exploring Southeast Asia. I had featured our first weekend in Plearnwan and Puktien Cabana Beach Resort. After a few days there, we were sent to the resort town of Hua Hin, Thailand.
Exploring Hua Hin
Once we checked into Subhamitra Hotel, we had dinner all together at Bam Bam Restaurant and made our way downtown to explore. We discovered a night market – a first for many of us, myself included. It was overwhelming with the crowds, but we adjusted. If anything, we added about 1/3 of the population as a staff. Everything from beautiful scarves and tourist gifts, to food vendors. The seafood was delicious and so fresh, being right by the ocean.
Hua Hin Beach & Khoa Takiab
The morning Chelsea and I walked to another town. By accident. Whoops!
My roommate Chelsea and I headed down to Hua Hin Beach – the biggest tourist draw to this town. It was a beautiful sunny day and, while exploring, we inadvertently walked the entire 7 km beach-front strip and ended up in a different municipality! Oops. That’s spontaneity and adventure for you.
It began when we saw this temple in the distance, which looked a lot closer than it was, and decided to go for it. The temple is named Hua Hin Takiab Temple and is a lot closer to the town of Khao Takiab than Hua Hin…which we managed on foot. Now…how do we get back? We managed to wave a tuktuk down to take us to Hua Hin. What an adventure, and it was only our first weekend in Thailand!
Local Train to Bangkok
We were supposed to stay an extra few days but as a group of about 8, we decided to catch a local train back to Bangkok early. We had yet to settle into our apartments and get ready for teaching. We grabbed our carry-ons and walked altogether to the very packed Railway Station.
The local train back was a 4 hour ride from the Hua Hin Railway Station to Bangkok Railway Station. These trains had options including first class, private air-conditioned rooms. We opted for third class (we were all students), which only cost $4.00 Canadian. Ridiculous. It was crowded, as a lot of Thais in neighbouring towns snuck onboard for free. 🙂 We made pals along the way, as most farangs (foreigners) take 1st or 2nd class, hardly ever 3rd.
Local transportation, really long walks on the beach, and getting lost – only to be helped out by genuinely kind locals. Welcome to Thailand!
