Cultural Display

Meet the 2017 Greek Pavilion. As previously mentioned, the theme celebrates 100 years of the Greek associations in Winnipeg.  The cultural display showcases memorabilia, photographs and accomplishments.  The overall curator of the cultural display describes how she “pulled (some of these items) out of (her) mom’s basement.”  I love that feel of community and authenticity in seeing items from people’s homes when they first immigrated to Winnipeg.

Food

Meet the 2017 Greek Pavilion.Souvlaki, gyros, spanakopita!  The list goes on.  The pavilion’s biggest sell for food items is the lemon potatoes and they go through 2000 pounds of potatoes for the week!  That’s a lot of potato peeling in the morning.  For dessert, try the baklava!  Top it off with their signature Zorba’s Kiss beverage.

We were generously offered some of their cookies and oh my word.  They were covered in icing sugar, and the other was a soft-baked chewier cookie.  DELICIOUS!   We were in Greek dessert heaven.

Entertainment

The engaging MCs, Patty and Dave, introduced us to the different dances in the show.   With the 100th anniversary, the show integrated the theme of immigration into their set.  We started off with a farewell party in Greece, and they also incorporated theatre in skits about life in Winnipeg.  There was an audience participation piece in which they had shot glasses on their fingers, clicking away to the rhythm of the music.

Above and Beyond

The night ended with the classic Zorba’s dance that included their junior dancers.  Way to pass on the torch and look forward to another 100 years!  Equal parts charming and fun, you will definitely have a smile on your face as you leave the Greek pavilion.  Opa!

Grateful again for the generosity and hospitality of the volunteers and organizers of the Greek Pavilion!  Cheers to 100 years!
