Cultural Display

Take a look through their cultural display to learn about different significant parts of Serbian culture based on regions.  Don’t forget to stock up on some snacks and Serbian treats from their souvenir shop.  I also learned that the costumes have a rich, jewel tone embroidery to it to represent the plums that are grown in Serbia.

Food

These dishes are filling!  If you’re coming on an empty stomach, make sure to try some of their delectable cheese-filled pie.  Check out the sarma which looks like a cabbage roll, but has a unique texture and flavour to it.  It’s interesting to see the influences of countries that are close together – and how certain dishes take its own shape and form depending on what region it’s being made in.

Entertainment

The footwork and rhythm at this pavilion will keep your eyes peeled for sure.  A catchy song and playful dance style got the show started.  Also, their junior dancers performed something called the bumblebee dance which had a game-like element to it.  Each show is actually different as they have a wide repertoire of dances to share.  The dancers perform pieces inspired by various regions, and you can see the change in colours and materials of the costumes.  There is one particular dance inspired by the rich cultures of the Ottoman empire, evident in the costumes and details worn by dancers.

Above and Beyond

The performing ensemble took home first place at the National Serbian Festival in New Jersey, and you can see it in the quality of their performances.

Thank you again to the Serbian KOLO Pavilion for being so welcoming and for your hospitality!  Opa!
