Manila is a metropolis in every way, so leave it to me to find myself a hotel across from a mall that integrates the indoors with the outdoors. Greenbelt malls, part of Ayala Land developments, is a series of 5 malls with high-end shops and a range of eateries. The malls surround a courtyard of green space ponds, and walkways connecting them all!
Concrete Jungle
I am infatuated with the contrast of nature and manmade buildings. Greenbelt brings the two together, with big brand shops surrounding a serene landscape of towering trees, lush vegetation and flowers. Beautiful lanterns wrap the trees for a very romantic view once the sun sets. Smack dab in the middle of the courtyard is a place of worship that houses friendly resident cats. This church was a surprise, although it shouldn’t be, considering that the Philippines has such a high Roman Catholic population.
Shopping and Dining
From stores like Gucci to mid-range brands like Kate Spade New York, this mall certainly caters to a certain demographic. Dining options, however, range from more formal dine-in options with international menus to local fast-food giant Jollibee. When it comes to eating, everyone can certainly find something at Greenbelt. One restaurant we chose to visit was Chateau 1771, with its French theme. We enjoyed a romantic al fresco date night, taking in the lighted trees and courtyard while enjoying some vegetarian pasta, a seafood platter, and a delectable cheese fondue. Another favourite was TWG Tea, which became a midday tea place for us in Singapore as well – always taking in different flavoured macaroons and their range of sorbets.
Visiting Metro Manila? Whether you’re staying for a few nights or for longer, definitely check out Greenbelt Mall. Escape the buildings for a few minutes, right in the middle of Makati!
